According to The Sun, Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata could be on his way out of Old Trafford with long-standing target Willian set to replace him.
Whats the story?
Boss Jose Mourinho tried to land Chelsea star Willian last summer and talks took place with the player’s representatives. The deal never materialised as the Brazillian decided to stay at Chelsea.
Willian’s contract lasts to 2020 and they would demand a £30million fee — the same price they paid to Shakhtar Donetsk five years ago.
Mourinho is planning to freshen up the squad as he looks to push for the title next season. Mata has struggled to command a regular place in the team and could be deemed surplus to requirements this summer.
Willian would be an excellent addition but Mata would be a miss
In an extremely poor season for last years champions Chelsea, Willan has been one of their best players. He has however be in and out of the squad with manager Antonio Conte not fully trusting the 27-year-old.
If, The Sun’s exclusive is true and he was to make a move to Old Trafford her would be an excellent signing. Manchester United have been lacking someone who can play on the right side of midfield this season, with Rashford, Mata, Lingard, Martial and Sanchez have all failed to perform at right midfield. All of them prefer to play either at number 10, as out and out strikers or on the left.
Signing Willian would, in theory, fix this issue. He has been used on an inside right midfield role under Conte to great success. He has an eye for goal, is pacy and skilful. Having worked with Mourinho before, the manager will know his game and how he can fit into the side.
He would definitely bring another dimension to Man United’s attack.
Juan Mata has failed to establish himself as a first team regular at Old Trafford. However, when he has played he has been excellent in linking the midfield and attack.
Despite lacking the pace of some of his colleagues, Mata’s excellent footballing brain means he can create chances and score goals. His excellent off the ball movement causes havoc to defences.
He offered Mourinho a different option and can play neat one-twos with the forwards.
Selling Mata, who is valued at £27m by transfermarkt.com, would be a mistake but if Man United were to replace him with Willian it might not be too damaging.
