According to reports in The Independent, Everton aren’t ready to give up on appointing Watford boss Marco Silva as their new manager despite an initial setback.
What’s the word, then?
Well, The Independent reported on Tuesday that the Hornets had rejected an approach from the Toffees to speak to the 40-year-old about succeeding Ronald Koeman, with the Hertfordshire-based outfit believing the matter would now be closed seeing as there is no release clause in the former Hull City chief’s contract.
The latest reports in The Independent say that the Merseyside outfit offered £8.5m in compensation to Watford, but it was turned down because they don’t want to lose the Portuguese manager midway through the season, and just a few months after they actually appointed him.
However, the report adds that Everton aren’t willing to give up and as well as increasing their compensation offer, they are also willing to double Silva’s wages and hand him a considerable January fund to tempt him into the job.
Why do Everton want him?
Despite narrowly failing to save Hull from relegation last season, Silva has impressed many with his tactical awareness and the way he sets his sides up to play.
The 40-year-old has led Watford to ninth place in the table this term following impressive away wins against Bournemouth, Southampton and Swansea City, as well as the 2-1 win against Arsenal at Vicarage Road.
The Portuguese boss certainly looks to have a bright future in the game, and he has obviously convinced majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri that he is the right man for the job.
Would he be a good appointment?
Considering the options they have, he probably would be.
It seems unlikely right now that the Merseyside outfit could attract a big name like Thomas Tuchel or Carlo Ancelotti, which leaves them to choose from the likes of Silva, Sam Allardyce and Sean Dyche.
The former certainly has the potential to build a project with Everton, but they also can’t afford to take many risks considering the delicate situation they currently find themselves in.
Collapses against Chelsea and Everton in recent weeks – as well as the 6-0 defeat at home to Manchester City – show that Silva isn’t the finished article yet, but the compensation fee could be the sticking point here with Watford remaining resolute.
